The Makalu trek is an outstanding trek to the base camp of the world’s fifth highest mountain, located east of Everest. A stunning and outstanding mountain, Makalu is a four sided pyramid rising to an altitude of 8462 meters. Makalu trek starts with a flight to Tumlinngtar, then we ascend through Sherpa villages and cultivated fields with views of the Chamlang Range in the distance and walk up the lush and beautiful Arun valley before crossing the Shipton La (4127 m) through rhododendron forest into the upper Barun Khola Valley.
During the Makalu Trek we will meet the ethnic groups of Limbu, Newar and Rai at the lower elevations and Tibetan Buddhists at the higher elevations. At the Makalu base we gain magnificent views of the imposing south face of Makalu, and with further forays along nearby ridges, we may gain magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse and the Barun Glacier. Makalu trek is an outstanding trek in one of the most remote areas in Nepal where very few trekkers can be seen. This is culturally and environmentally diverse region and worth to visit. The Makalu Trek trail passes through the Makalu National Park and ends at the base camp where you can see fantastic view of Everest, Makalu and Lhotse. As trail goes on higher altitude, one should be ready to face the altitude sickness and diverse weather conditions. Sometime this weather may be the obstacle for the further progress. The region of Makalu trek offers varieties of culturally and ethnically rich people and diverse nature in the Himalaya.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1345 meters)
Arriving Kathmandu from your homeport, where Mosaic Adventure representative meets you at the airport, transfer you to the hotel nearby Thamel as per your requirement. Great food from all over the world, fabulous shopping and Durbar square with its several temples and markets are nearby Thamel. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2: Trip arrangements, meeting with staff and sightseeing around Kathmandu Valley
You will meet your trekking guide, discuss the trekking program and coordinate any last-minute arrangements. After staff meeting, with our professional tour guide we visit Pashupatinath, Boudhanath Stupa and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Rest of the time you can use for travelling around Thamel and shopping of needed equipment and other necessaries. Overnight at hotel.
Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar and drive to Khandbari (1067m)
We take a short flight of around 50 minutes from Tribhuan International Airport (TIA) to Tumlingtar (450 m). Tumlingtar airport is a warm place just a grass trip in the middle of some hills. Then take a drive to Khandbari where we meet the trekking crew. Overnight at guesthouse.
Day 04: Khandbari to Sakurate (1893m)
The trail of our Makalu trek heads due north while the river veers slightly to the northwest. Walking up the ridge to the village of Mane Bhanjyang(1158m) and on up through terraced fields through Pangma to Bhotebas, there are the first really spectacular views of the mountains to the north. The route then further goes through the small settlement and a stretch of rhododendron forest to camp just beyond Sakurate.
Day 05: Sakurate to Num (1524m)
The trail continues heading along the ridge, with rhododendron forest now dominant. Then begin a gentle hike through Mude. The erstwhile forest on the slopes has been denuded to make way for cultivation.
Day 06: Num to sedua (1700m)
On the other side it goes up steeply, until we get the get to the corn and buckwheat fields of Rumruma. The landscape is rocky and the terraces are very small. A long, difficult climb brings us to Seduwa (1460 m), on top of the ridge between the Kashua Khola and Arun Khola. We camp at the school. (6 hours, 1460m)
Day 07: Sedua to Tashigaon(2063m)
Climb to the north across cultivated terrace field and then passes the National Park Forest Project and reaches Manigaon. From Manigaon the trail turns west and makes a gradual climb to Chyaksadanda and to Ropesa. Many orchids and other flowers hang from the moss-clad trees along a faint jungle trail to the Sherpa village of Tashigaon, the last village we would see on the way to Makalu Base Camp.
Day 08: Tashigaon to Kauma (2500)
Begin a steep climb through forest, which can be magical in the early morning mist. The climb continues through Unshisa to Kauma. Probably, another night for acclimatization.
Day 09: Kauma to Mumbuk (3500m)
Trail twists and turns steeply, passing through forest before emerging on to a ridge with Mani walls, numerous prayer flags and superb mountain views, including Kanchenjunga to the east. Makalu trek path goes through La pass via Keke La pass (4230m) and Tutu La pass(4200m) where Chorten can be seen. From here it is a fairly gentle descent walk through rhododendron and pine forest to level off at Mumbuk.
Day 10: Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka (3660m)
The day begins with a sharp descent down a wooden ravine and continues on to cross the Barun Khola just beyonf Tamatan Kharka. The trial is indistinct along much of the route. It can also be slippery with numerous rock falls, so extra is required. You are now following the Barn Khola along its northern bank.Trial goes through the seasonal settlement of Yangri Kharka and a little aead is the Nehe Kharka.
Day 11: Nehe kharka to Shershon (4720m)
With a gain of over 1500m along today's route, the problem of altitude sickness is common. Soon after Nehe kharka, crossing the Barun Khola by wooden bridge and uphill through forest, the river valley becomes increasingly steep, with waterfalls gushing picturesquely down sheer rock faces. The trail continues its hike past the tiny settlements of Jhark Kharka, Ramara and Mera before reaching Shershon.
Day 12: Shershon to Makalu Base Camp (4853m)
From Shersong, the trail climbs gradually to a minor pass above Makalu Base Camp. After walking nearly one hour, you can be at the base camp. It is a rocky barren place with the large Barun Glacier beyond, but there are superb & magnificient views of Makalu itself. You will have an excellent view of Makalu, Baruntse (7220m), Peak 6 and Peak 7 and the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse.
Day 13: Nehe Kharka – Shipton – La Camp
Trek through Mumbuk and ascend Shipton- La camp for the beautiful sunset views of Makalu and Chamlang.
Day 14: Shipton – La Camp – Sedua
Get up early and have the sunrise panorama towards Kanchenjunga and descend towards Sedua for the halt.
Day 15: Sedua - Mure
Descend across Arun and through Num camp at Mure.
Day 16: Mure – Khandbari
Along the ridge and down to Khandbari.
